What If Your Brain Notices More Than You Think?

The other day I was mountain biking behind a friend on one of those ridiculously skinny trails. There wasn’t enough room to really gain momentum before heading uphill, and before I knew it, my tire slipped and I tipped sideways off the trail.

Thankfully, it wasn’t a dramatic fall. A pile of leaves and a mountain laurel bush caught me before I went very far.

But before I even stood up… my brain started playing Wide Open Spaces by The Dixie Chicks. (Yes I know that ages me)

“A place to make a big mistake…”

I laughed out loud because… yeah. Apparently my subconscious has a soundtrack.

A few days earlier, I was riding behind Hudson again when a completely different song popped into my head for reasons that made perfect sense in the moment. It got me thinking that my brain is constantly making connections and telling little stories without me ever asking it to.

And I don’t think mine is unique. I think all of our brains are doing this. We’re constantly collecting information, noticing patterns, making associations, assigning meaning. Most of it happens so quickly and so quietly that we never stop to realize it’s happening.

Which is exactly why I’ve always believed branding matters. Not because people consciously analyze your logo or study your color palette. But because their brains are constantly gathering evidence.

The weight of a business card. The confidence of your photography. The way your words make them feel. The texture of a thick, uncoated paper with a subtle emboss. The simplicity of a package sitting on a shelf. The way a website either feels calm and trustworthy… or overwhelming and uncertain.

Most people couldn’t tell you why one brand feels more established than another. They might simply say, “It just felt right.” But “just felt right” is rarely an accident.

It’s the accumulation of dozens—sometimes hundreds—of tiny details working together to tell the same story. That’s what I love about branding. It isn’t about making something prettier.

It’s about becoming intentional with all of the signals you’re already sending.

Because whether you’re selling a candle, a service, or simply introducing yourself to someone new, people are always taking in more than they realize.

And if our brains are already making meaning…

Why not make sure you’re giving them something meaningful to find?

Who knew teleportation was the secret? To building a business. Pursuing a dream. Creating meaningful work. Or simply becoming more of who you’re meant to be. I know that probably sounds ridiculous. Stay with me. I’ll tie it together. Lately, I’ve been playing a lot of Minecraft with my son. The other day, we were […]

One of the biggest mistakes service-based businesses make is assuming people are looking for information when they’re really looking for reassurance. They want to know they’re understood. They want to know someone recognizes what they’re experiencing. And they want to feel confident they’re in the right place before they ever reach out. For therapy practices, […]
